How do I Make A Video Game?
I am a programmer (sorta) who has used Game Maker to make some 2D games, but now I want to take the “Next Step”. I want to create a game similar to the Legend of Zelda games (For N64, Wii, and GC). I have some modeling programs and experience in modelling. All I really need is a cheap (free) 3D “engine” of some sort to allow me to create this sort of game. Hopefully one of you can help me. I will be willing to learn another programming language in order to use it, or if it doesn’t have one (Click to create kinda thing) then I’ll be fine with that to.
So the bottom line is:
What is a good 3D Engine or piece of software (that is free) that will allow me to create this sort of game?

Well the easiest to use and write with (in my opinion) is the XNA express platform that microsoft recently released. it uses c# express edition (both are free and available for download on microsoft.com)
additionally, ogre3d is good if you know c++
irrlicht is also free and a good engine (but the animation i thought was kinda crappy, was mesh based instead of bone based, so leaves it very limited for doing physics on the animations).
I started with a basic C# book, then moved up to directx but now that i’m using XNA it’s tons easier than directx. Now the problem would be getting meshes into the content engine… right now i think it only supports microsofts directx models, which is disappointed but i guess you could write a custom importer for the content pipeline to import whatever model you want (if you’re savvy enough).
